| Reverse description | Central round hole flanked symmetrically by two facing lion heads set within circular medallions, each surrounded by foliate sprigs. An open wreath of olive and laurel branches frames the central hole below and between the lion heads. The Arabic denomination legend غرش واحد (one ghirsh) appears in the upper field, with the numeral 1 flanking the hole at either side. The Latin inscription 1 PIASTRE is inscribed below the hole, and the dual dates 1940 and ١٩٤٠ (in Eastern Arabic numerals) appear in the lower exergue, separated by a central dot. A beaded border encloses the entire design. |

Issued under the French Mandate administration during the fall of France, this zinc issue replaced the earlier bronze coinage as a wartime expedient — base metals substituting for strategic ones requisitioned for the war effort. Lebanon was still formally under Vichy control in 1940, though the political situation would shift dramatically the following year when Free French and British forces invaded in June 1941.
