Obverse description Central device depicts the armorial eagle of the Grand Master, rendered as a displayed eagle with wings spread, a sword or lance issuing upward from the body. The circling legend reads F.D.AN:MANOEL DE VILHENA.M, referencing Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena, separated by punctuation stops. The design occupies most of the field with the legend running continuously around the periphery within a plain rim.

Reverse description Central field bears a prominent eight-pointed Maltese Cross, the characteristic emblem of the Order of St. John, with each arm bifurcated into two points and decorated with incised detailing. The cross is set within a circular legend reading *.IN HOC.SIGNO MILITAMVS., meaning 'Under this sign we serve,' separated by stops and an ornamental star. A toothed or beaded inner border frames the legend, with a plain outer rim completing the design.
