Ukraine's 1994 hryvnia silver issue predates the actual reintroduction of the hryvnia as circulating currency by two years — the hryvnia didn't replace the karbovanets in everyday transactions until September 1996. These collector pieces were issued while the country was still technically operating on an interim currency, making them an odd artifact of monetary anticipation during a period of post-Soviet economic instability that saw Ukrainian inflation exceed 10,000% in 1993 alone.
