Obverse description The obverse carries a portrait vignette of Volodymyr the Great, Grand Duke of Kyiv (980–1015), the ruler who unified the Eastern Slavic lands under Kyiv and initiated the Christianization of Rus in 988–989. The denomination numeral "1" appears on both sides of the portrait, with the state name "УКРАЇНА" and the figure's name "ВОЛОДИМИР ВЕЛИКИЙ" inscribed in Cyrillic. The design incorporates fine guilloche underprint patterns typical of intaglio-printed Ukrainian currency of the early series.
