Additional information

Christian III struck this taler the year he formally consolidated Lutheran control over Denmark, having defeated the Catholic opposition in the Count's War and imprisoned the entire Danish Catholic episcopate en masse in 1536. The Joachimstaler denomination itself originated in Bohemia's Joachimsthal mines roughly two decades earlier, and the format spread across northern Europe precisely as Protestant princes found large-denomination silver coins politically useful for paying armies and projecting authority.

The Galster UU#101 attribution places this among the earliest Danish talers of the reign.
