Additional information

The Imperial British East Africa Company received its royal charter in September 1888, granting it administrative authority over territories in what is now Kenya and Uganda. Lacking time to mint a purpose-built coinage, the company counterstamped existing silver coins already circulating in the region — the Estonian kroon being among the heavier European pieces readily available in East African trade channels. The counterstamp legitimized foreign specie as company currency without the expense of a dedicated issue.

The I.B.E.A. Co. lost its charter in 1895 when the British government assumed direct control, ending one of the shorter experiments in chartered-company monetary administration.
