Kazneni zavod Lepoglava was a penal institution in northern Croatia — one of the oldest and most notorious in the region — that issued its own internal scrip for use within the prison. These notes functioned as a closed-currency system, allowing inmates to make purchases within the facility while preventing access to ordinary money. Prison-issued scrip of this kind was not unique to Yugoslavia, but surviving examples from specific Croatian institutions are genuinely uncommon in collector holdings.
The stamp served as the primary security and authentication device — a practical choice for an institution without access to sophisticated printing infrastructure.
