The Maldives decimalised its currency in 1947, replacing the old kasi system, but low-denomination coins like this laari saw little practical demand in an archipelago economy where the smallest everyday transactions often bypassed coinage entirely. Aluminium was the logical choice for a coin of negligible face value — cheap to strike, light enough to ship economically across the atolls.
