Additional information

Sobhuza II holds the record for the longest-verified reign of any monarch in recorded history — over 82 years on the Swazi throne, from 1899 until his death in 1982. When this coin was struck, he had already outlasted every colonial administrator who had ever governed his country. Swaziland gained independence from Britain in 1968, and the Central Bank was established shortly after; these early lilangeni issues were among the first physical expressions of a fully autonomous Swazi monetary system.

The lilangeni was introduced at parity with the South African rand, a practical necessity given Swaziland's economic integration with its much larger neighbor.
