Additional information

By 1982, Turkey had been under military rule for two years following the September 1980 coup led by General Kenan Evren. Aluminum coinage of this period was an economic necessity — inflation was gutting the lira's purchasing power so aggressively that the metal value of older cupro-nickel coins had become a practical concern. The 1 Lira denomination was already nearly worthless in daily commerce by the time these were struck.
