Comments

Quebec City bakers issued bread tickets extensively in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a credit system for regular customers — pay in advance, redeem by the loaf. Prémont's issue is a private trade token in paper form rather than a banknote in any monetary sense, redeemable only at the issuing bakery and worthless the moment the business closed or changed hands. These ephemeral pieces were printed cheaply and discarded routinely, which is precisely why so few survive in any condition.
