Christiania began issuing its own currency as an explicitly anti-capitalist gesture, a deliberate contradiction that the community has never fully resolved. The Løn series, struck in fine silver, targets the collector market — a pragmatic funding mechanism for a commune that has operated in permanent legal dispute with the Danish state since its founding squatters occupied the former Bådsmandsstræde Barracks in 1971.
