Issued ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics as part of Azerbaijan's broader commemorative sports program, this coin marks one of the few instances of the Central Bank producing copper-nickel collector issues alongside its more heavily promoted silver series. Canoe sprint had been a modest but consistent event for Azerbaijani athletes at the international level, though the country had yet to claim Olympic hardware in the discipline by the time this piece was struck.
