The Polska Krajowa Kasa Pożyczkowa was itself a transitional institution — established under German occupation in 1916 to issue currency for the occupied Polish territories, it continued operating into the early years of the restored Polish state, issuing notes nominally denominated in marks even as Poland's political future was still being fought out at Versailles and on the eastern front. This 1919 issue is a product of that awkward interregnum, when the monetary infrastructure predated the nation it was now meant to serve.
Adam Półtawski, better known today as the designer of the Półtawski Antykwa typeface, brought genuine typographic discipline to the PKKP series. His influence is clearest in the lettering rather than the vignettes.
