Liberland — a self-declared micronation occupying roughly 7 square kilometers of disputed land on the western bank of the Danube between Croatia and Serbia — issued this piece in 2016 as part of an early effort to establish physical currency alongside its Bitcoin-based Merit token. The territory has been claimed since 2015 by Czech libertarian politician Vít Jedlička, who exploited a boundary ambiguity left unresolved after the Yugoslav dissolution. Croatian authorities have repeatedly prevented settlers from entering, meaning the nation issuing this coin has never had a functioning resident population.
