Obverse description Cast copper cash coin of typical East Asian square-holed round form, bearing a four-character reign legend in Chinese kaishu (regular script) disposed clockwise around a central square perforation. The characters 貞, 觀, 永, and 寳 are arranged in the four cardinal positions — top, right, bottom, and left respectively — each framed between the inner square rim and the outer circular rim. The raised legends are rendered in bold relief against a flat field, with the stroke weight and foot details varying by die variety as documented in DHJ nos. 1.55–1.58. The coin exhibits a deeply patinated dark olive-brown and verdigris surface consistent with prolonged burial, typical of Heian-period coinage.
