| Obverse description | Round cast copper coin featuring a central square hole framed by a raised square border, characteristic of the Joseon-era cash coin tradition. The four-character legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo) is arranged in cruciform fashion around the central aperture in regular script (kaishu): 常 (Sang) at top, 通 (Tong) at right, 寶 (Bo) at bottom, and 平 (Pyeong) at left, reading top-to-bottom then right-to-left per convention. The characters are well-formed in the traditional Chinese regular script style, slightly raised in relief against a flat field. The rim is plain and slightly irregular, consistent with hand-cast production methods of the period. |
