Obverse description Central square hole flanked by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform layout within a plain round field. Reading clockwise from top: 常 (Sang), 寶 (Bo), 平 (Pyong), and 通 (Tong), forming the inscription 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), meaning 'Sangpyong Currency' — a reference to the Ever-Normal Treasury (常平廳), the issuing department of the Joseon government. The characters are rendered in regular script (楷書) in the traditional Chinese manner standard to Joseon cash coinage.
