Obverse description Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform fashion around the central square hole, read clockwise from the top: 三 (Sam), 寶 (Bo), 韓 (Han), 重 (Chung), forming the legend 三韓重寶 (Samhan Jungbo, meaning 'Heavy Currency of the Three Han States'). The characters are boldly cast in raised relief within a plain field, flanked by the inner rim of the square perforation and the raised outer rim of the coin. The flat, unadorned field is typical of Goryeo dynasty cast coinage, reflecting the East Asian cash coin tradition.
