Obverse description Intaglio portrait of Herbert Macaulay (1864–1946), Nigerian nationalist and statesman, positioned left of centre against a multicolour guilloche underprint in pink and olive tones. Four corner vignettes each carry the Naira symbol (₦1) within circular guilloche rosettes, flanked by ornate letterpress panels at left and right margins. An Arabic-script panel appears below centre, with the denomination "ONE NAIRA" in bold block letters to the upper right and the issuer's title arching across the top in red and olive.

Reverse description Central vignette on the right half presents a detailed rendering of a Benin bronze ceremonial mask, executed in olive-gold intaglio against a pale guilloche ground. To the left, a large circular guilloche medallion carries the curved inscription "CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA" and encloses the Nigerian coat of arms at its base. The denomination "ONE NAIRA" is lettered in white on a solid olive band running across the lower margin, with ₦1 counter-vignettes repeated at all four corners.
