Indonesia's first post-independence currency series — issued by the Republic before the formal transfer of sovereignty from the Netherlands in December 1949 — circulated alongside Dutch colonial notes in a country still legally disputed. The 1 New Rupiah was part of a stopgap emission intended to assert monetary authority over Republican-controlled territories while the Hague negotiations were still unresolved.
P#35 is among the more modestly valued notes in the series, partly because low denominations survived in higher quantities. The "New Rupiah" designation distinguished these issues from earlier Republican emissions that had already depreciated sharply during the independence struggle.
