| Obverse description | Facing bust of José Artigas, the national hero of Uruguay, rendered in high relief at the centre of the dodecagonal field, depicted in early 19th-century military dress with a cravat and lapelled coat. The legend URUGUAY is inscribed along the left periphery and ARTIGAS along the right, both reading upward from the base. The date 1976 appears in the lower exergual area beneath the portrait. A small mint mark is visible to the lower left of the bust. |

| Reverse description | The large numeral 1 dominates the centre of the dodecagonal field, flanked on either side by a horizontal sprig of olive or wheat, the two sprigs meeting symmetrically behind the numeral to form a decorative foliate device. The denomination legend NUEVO PESO is inscribed in two words along the lower arc of the coin, set within the flat inner border. The field is otherwise plain, emphasising the bold typographic presentation of the face value. |
