Issued as part of Peru's long-running "Riqueza y Orgullo del Perú" commemorative circulation series, this coin honors the Hotel Bolívar — known historically as the Hotel Palace — a Lima landmark opened in 1924 on the Plaza San Martín. Its construction was financed partly through public subscription and timed to coincide with the centenary celebrations of the Battle of Ayacucho, the engagement that effectively ended Spanish colonial rule on the continent.
The hotel became a favored haunt of foreign correspondents and diplomats throughout the mid-twentieth century, particularly during Peru's politically turbulent 1960s and 70s.
