| Additional information |
Ramón Castilla served as president of Peru twice — 1845–1851 and 1855–1862 — and his second term ended slavery and the indigenous head tax, reforms that fundamentally altered Peruvian society. The coin commemorates his rank of Gran Mariscal, the highest military honor Peru confers, earned through decades of fighting across the wars of independence and subsequent regional conflicts.
The 1997 issue belongs to a commemorative series from the BCRP honoring figures central to Peruvian nationhood, struck in sterling-adjacent silver for the collector market rather than circulation.
