Additional information

Surendra Bikram Shah ruled Nepal from 1847 effectively under the thumb of Jung Bahadur Rana, whose seizure of power in the Kot Massacre of 1846 reduced the monarchy to a ceremonial fixture. Coins continued to be struck in the king's name throughout this period, but real authority — including decisions over the currency — rested entirely with the Rana prime ministers.

The extended date range of this issue reflects that administrative continuity rather than any particular royal initiative.
