Additional information

Harald Sigurdsson — Harald Hardråde — seized the Norwegian throne in 1047 after two decades of service as a Varangian mercenary commander in Byzantium, returning with enough plundered wealth to buy his way into power. His coinage program drew directly on English penny types he had encountered, and likely on English moneyers operating in Scandinavia following Cnut's earlier monetary reforms. The absence of inner rings on both faces distinguishes this variety from the more common ringed issues and likely reflects a transitional moment in die production rather than a deliberate design decision.
