| Reverse description | A bold voided long cross divides the reverse into four quarters, each containing a pellet or small annulet in the field, consistent with the Hiberno-Norse imitative penny tradition derived from contemporary Anglo-Saxon prototypes. A crozier or stylised staff element appears in one quarter, reinforcing the ecclesiastical iconography of this anonymous issue. The cross extends to the inner beaded border, which encircles the entire design. The execution is characteristically irregular, reflecting hand-hammered production on an imperfectly shaped flan. A degraded or blundered legend surrounds the cross within the beaded border, largely illegible. |
