| Additional information |
The Gambia gained independence from Britain in February 1965, and this coin belongs to the first decimal currency series issued the following year — a coinage the new nation designed from scratch rather than adopting a transitional arrangement with Sterling. The decision to retain Elizabeth II on the obverse was a political calculation common among newly independent Commonwealth states, signaling continuity to foreign creditors and trading partners while the Dalasi system established itself.
The series was struck at the Royal Mint, Tower Hill.
