Saint Helena and Ascension were administered jointly as a single British territory from 1922, but did not issue coins under that combined designation until 1984 — a gap of over six decades during which the islands relied on British coinage. The 1984 series, of which this penny is a part, represented the territory's first native decimal coinage and was produced in a single run; no penny of this type was struck in any subsequent year.
