| Obverse description | Central shield of the Orange Free State arms, Type I with straight top and sides, surmounted by two bugle horns in chief and one in base. The upper two-thirds of the shield displays a liberty tree (orange tree) flanked by three sheep to the left and a lion to the right, while the lower third bears an ox-wagon facing sinister. The shield is flanked by a palm branch to the left and a laurel branch to the right, tied at the base with a ribbon. The circular legend ORANJE VRYJSTAAT (Orange Free State) arcs above, with the motto GEDULD EN MOED (Patience and Courage) on a ribbon below the shield, and the date 1888 at the bottom of the field. |
