El Bruc issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican government's inability to maintain adequate coin circulation forced hundreds of Catalan municipalities to print their own scrip. These local issues — collectively catalogued under the "billetes de necesidad" — were legal within their issuing municipality but worthless the moment you crossed into the next town.
Turró 538 is one of the more obscure entries in that Catalan municipal series. El Bruc's total wartime scrip output was tiny, and cardboard notes at this weight and size suffered badly from handling — attrition was high.
