La Riera de Gaià is a small municipality in the Camp de Tarragona, and this note is a product of the acute small-change crisis that paralyzed Catalonia and much of Republican Spain from 1936 onward. As silver and copper coins disappeared from circulation almost overnight — hoarded, melted, or simply lost to wartime disruption — hundreds of Catalan municipalities turned to locally printed paper to fill the gap. Imprenta Solé in Tarragona supplied a number of these emergency emissions across the province, producing short runs on heavy stock rather than banknote paper.
The Turró catalogue remains the essential reference for this material, and 2127 places this among the later-documented municipal issues.
