Noalejo is a small municipality in the province of Jaén, Andalusia, and this note belongs to the vast ecosystem of locally-issued emergency paper money — the billetes de necesidad — that proliferated across Republican-held Spain during the Civil War after coin hoarding created a severe small-change crisis from 1936 onward. Municipal councils, trade unions, and shopkeeper associations all issued their own scrip, most of it on whatever card stock or heavy paper was locally available.
The thick substrate is typical of issues produced without access to a professional printer — likely a local stationer or press. Most of these municipal issues were redeemed or destroyed after the war, and pieces from villages of Noalejo's size rarely survived in any quantity.
