The Banco Hipotecario del Pacífico was one of several regional Colombian mortgage banks authorized under the 1887 banking law, issuing notes backed theoretically by real estate assets rather than metallic reserves — a model that made practical sense in a department where liquid capital was chronically scarce but land was not. By 1905, Colombia had just emerged from the devastating Thousand Days War, and regional bank paper circulated in a climate of profound monetary distrust; the national government's own peso paper had inflated catastrophically during the conflict.

ABNC's involvement in Colombian provincial bank printing was extensive during this period, with multiple regional institutions sharing plate contracts out of New York.
