Argentina's Caja de Conversión was established in 1890 specifically to manage the conversion of paper pesos into gold at a fixed rate — though that convertibility was suspended almost immediately and only restored in 1899. These notes were issued during the brief window of genuine gold convertibility that lasted until 1914, when the First World War forced suspension again.
