Comments

The Banco Provincial de Salta was one of several Argentine provincial banks that continued issuing their own currency well into the early twentieth century, operating under provincial charters that predated the eventual consolidation of note-issuing authority under the Banco de la Nación Argentina. By 1907, that consolidation was already well underway, making late issues from provincial institutions like this one relatively short-lived in circulation.

Salta's geographic remoteness from Buenos Aires gave provincial paper a practical necessity that coastal provinces lacked — federal currency didn't always reach the northwest in sufficient quantity.
