Chile's aluminium peso was introduced in 1992 as part of a broader coinage reform following years of economic stabilization under the post-Pinochet transition government. The shift to aluminium — unusual for a circulating peso denomination — reflected the negligible purchasing power the 1 peso retained by that point, making base metal the only economically rational choice for production.
The series ran largely unchanged for over two decades, a long production life that generated enormous mintages and left virtually no scarcity at any date within the range.
