Paraguay's post-war coinage ambitions in the late 1880s were severely constrained by the country's financial ruin following the War of the Triple Alliance, which had ended in 1870 with an estimated 60–70% of the male population dead. This piece belongs to a series of patterns struck in aluminium as the government explored cheap metal alternatives for a currency system it could barely afford to maintain. No regular-issue aluminium coinage resulted from these trials.
