Reverse description A bust-length portrait of Cuban physician and scientist Carlos Juan Finlay faces right in three-quarter view, rendered with fine detail including his characteristic round spectacles, beard, and formal attire. Behind and to the left of the effigy, a tropical landscape is depicted featuring a royal palm tree and a large mosquito in high relief, alluding to Finlay's pioneering discovery of the mosquito as the vector of yellow fever. The legend CARLOS J. FINLAY arcs along the upper periphery, while the commemorative dates 1833 · 1988 appear in the lower field, marking the 155th anniversary of his birth.
