Additional information

Cuba has issued commemorative silver pesos under this general program since the 1990s, pairing historical figures in combinations that are occasionally geopolitically pointed. Fidel Castro and Ernest Hemingway make an odd but historically grounded pair: Hemingway lived at Finca Vigía outside Havana from 1939 until 1960, departing just as the revolution consolidated power, and Castro reportedly met him at the 1960 Ernest Hemingway Fishing Tournament — one of their only known encounters before the American's final departure from the island.
