Cuba's convertible peso series, to which this piece belongs, operated as a parallel currency system designed specifically for tourist transactions and dollar-substitution after the U.S. embargo tightened in the 1990s. The CUC, as it was known, circulated alongside the ordinary Cuban peso at a legally enforced 25:1 ratio — a two-tier monetary architecture that created persistent distortions in the domestic economy until the system was officially dismantled in 2021.
Darwin's appearance here reflects Cuba's long tradition of issuing collector-oriented convertible peso coins featuring international scientific and cultural figures rather than domestic iconography.
