Additional information

Montevideo was under blockade by forces loyal to Manuel Oribe and his Argentine-backed allies from 1843 to 1851 — one of the longest sieges in South American history. With normal commerce strangled and Buenos Aires silver cut off, the besieged Colorados struck these coins from melted plate silver and whatever bullion could be scraped together inside the walls, which accounts for the notoriously inconsistent alloy purity found across surviving specimens.

The .875 fineness was the target, not always the result. Assay marks on individual pieces occasionally tell a different story.
