Cuba issued a wave of commemorative pesos through the 1980s targeting the international collector market — hard currency the Revolution badly needed as Soviet subsidies grew less reliable. This particular piece marks the anniversary of the 1959 revolution, though by 1987 the Cuban economy was already showing the strains that would culminate in the "Special Period" following the Soviet collapse four years later.
