| Obverse description | The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield quartered with a key, a royal palm, and alternating blue and white stripes representing the sea, surmounted by a Phrygian cap on a pike and flanked by an oak branch to the left and a laurel branch to the right. Two five-pointed stars appear in the field, one to each side of the wreath. The legend REPUBLICA DE CUBA arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 1 PESO is inscribed in the lower field below the arms. |

Cuba issued a substantial run of commemorative pesos tied to the 1980 Moscow Olympics, despite the Games being overshadowed by the U.S.-led boycott involving over 60 nations. Cuba, firmly in the Soviet orbit, not only participated but sent one of its strongest athletic delegations — finishing fourth in the overall medal count. These coins were produced partly for the collector export market, a hard-currency revenue stream Havana exploited aggressively throughout the 1970s and 80s via the Casa de la Moneda's foreign sales program.
