Reverse description A prominent eight-pointed Maltese cross occupies the central field, its four arms extending nearly to the beaded inner circle. The cross is rendered in the characteristic style of the Hospitaller Order, with deeply incised lines radiating from the center. A circular legend surrounds the device along the coin's periphery, partially legible due to the irregular hammered flan.

Additional information

John de la Cassière served as Grand Master during one of the Order's most turbulent decades — his tenure began just one year after the catastrophic losses at the Battle of Lepanto, where Hospitaller galleys fought as part of the Holy League against the Ottomans. The picciolo was the smallest denomination the Order struck, a purely local currency for the island economy of Malta rather than the international mercantile coinage the Knights also produced in silver.
