Obverse description Central device depicts a quartered shield bearing the arms of the English East India Company, rendered in a crude hammered style characteristic of early Bombay coinage. The shield is contained within a roughly circular border of pellets or beads, visible along the left periphery. The surfaces are heavily worn and irregular, consistent with the hand-struck nature of these early copperoons. The overall execution reflects the primitive die-cutting and striking technology available at the nascent Bombay Mint in the late seventeenth century.
