Sudan's 1955 issue came in a peculiar political moment: the country formally achieved independence on 1 January 1956, meaning notes dated 1955 were prepared under British-Egyptian Condominium authority for a state that was already, in practical terms, governing itself. The Sudan Government series replaced the notes of the Sudan Currency Board, and Waterlow & Sons — by then in the final years before their 1961 absorption into De La Rue — handled production.
Waterlow's involvement with Sudan was brief. The P#A3 is among the scarcer entries in this transitional series, with relatively limited print runs tied to the short window of the issuing authority's existence.
