Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence in November 1965 created an immediate currency problem. The existing notes bore the name of the Central African Currency Board, which had no legal standing in post-UDI Rhodesia. This series was rushed into issue to establish a functioning domestic monetary authority under internationally imposed sanctions — a situation that shaped every production decision, including the decision to suppress the printer's imprint entirely, almost certainly to shield Rhodesian Security Printing from international scrutiny.

Bruce served as the first Governor of the Reserve Bank of Rhodesia, appointed at its founding in 1965.
