| Additional information |
Table Island is a tiny, ice-scoured outcrop in the South Sandwich Islands, administered under the British Antarctic Territory — a jurisdiction with no permanent civilian population and therefore no circulating economy. Coins issued under BAT authority are legal tender in name only, produced primarily for the philatelic and numismatic trade. The British Antarctic Territory was formally established by Letters Patent in 1962, partly to consolidate overlapping claims that conflicted with Argentine and Chilean assertions in the same sector.
The South Sandwich group itself was not permanently staffed after Argentina vacated its Thule Island station in 1982, following the Falklands War.
