The International Bank of Jersey was a short-lived institution, and its notes reflect the precarious nature of private banking on the island during the 1860s. Jersey sat outside the Bank of England's jurisdiction, which made it attractive to private issuers but left noteholders with little recourse when banks failed — and several did.
P#S161 is a rare survival. The "S" prefix in the Pick catalogue denotes private or regional issue, and Jersey private bank notes from this period were redeemed, destroyed, or simply lost at high rates.
